Cheap and cheerful

This Hitachi AX-M65 caught our eye recently on display for less than $150, so we decided to take a look at it to see if it would be money well spent.

Its quite a distinctive looking CD Micro system – the center unit is basically a cube, as are the two speakers and it’s compact in size, making it a good choice for the kitchen or bedroom where space may be a premium. The light grey finish is unusual, if a little cheap looking (if Hitachi were trying for a brushed-metal look, they failed!). Continue reading

A Micro HiFi designed for recording

What a pleasure it is to be able to record direct from CD to CD-R or CD-RW without the need to use a PC. Obviously Kenwood agree, and this stylish Micro HiFi is one of the first to come with a CD-R/RW drive as standard. With a cassette deck, an RDS tuner (which will automatically tune itself to maintain the strongest signal), a digital input/output and an analog AUX input, the possibilities for recording music are endless. As long time fans of Aiwa, we were a little surprised to see this XR-MS5 looking so different. It seems that the days of Aiwa building ordinary-looking midi systems with big bass and huge speakers have passed, and that the designers have been given a chance to experiment. Continue reading
